"Restructuring of solar activity": the number of magnetic storms has increased several times

Astrophysicists from the Russian Academy of Sciences reported an increase in the number of magnetic storms

The X-ray Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that the number of magnetic storms from January to April 2025 increased by 2.5 times compared to the same period last year.

The number of days with magnetic storms in the first four months of 2024 was 8, in 2025 - 21. Astrophysicists named the formation of large coronal holes on the Sun as the main reason, which were almost absent last year. Solar flare activity has decreased compared to the previous year.

The largest storms since the beginning of the year occurred on January 1 (G4.0, i.e. 4 points on a 5-point scale) and April 16 (G3.7).

Astrophysicists have announced a restructuring of solar activity both in absolute terms and in terms of the contribution of various factors, but they consider it premature to draw conclusions about the beginning of a new phase of the solar cycle.
